Aerial view of the ancient fortress of Rhamnous. Click to view full size imageRhamnous is an isolated site in the northeastern part of Attica, overlooking the sea passage between continental Greece and Euboia.

In ancient times it was of strategic importance and it hosted an Athenian garisson in a fortress. In close proximity to the fortress are the temples of Nemesis (godess of divine justice) and Themis (godess of human justice). Today, the remains of the temples and the ancient fortress comprise a very large arhaeological site. The site is not well known and draws very few visitors. There is only one (very bored) guard at the gate and you can roam the site freely. When I visited on a weekday at the end of June, I was the only visitor from 8am until noon when I left.

If you venture to Rhamnous, make sure you bring a bottle of water with you, there is no potable water source on the site. The hike from the gate to the fortress on the acropolis is about 1Km.
