Porto Katsiki is definitely one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. It is located in the southwest part of the island of Lefkada, about 60Km from the town of Lefkas. Getting there is interesting. Half of the way the road is good although there are lots of turns and several hills (more like mountains) to climb. The other half of the way the road becomes narrow, very narrow. It's a single lane road, not a single lane in each direction, one single lane for both directions. For the most part, opposite moving cars can squeeze by if the drivers are careful but at some points there's simply not enough room, one of the cars will have to back up.

It takes about one hour to reach Porto Katsiki. Once you get there you will be rewarded with beautiful vistas, and a nice beach where you can spend the day. There are a few taverns and snack bars right before you climb down the 101 steps to the beach. There are umbrellas and lounge chairs for rent at the beach.

Unspoiled, uncrowded Pefkoulia Beach is only a 20-minute drive from the town of Lefkas. Lots os shade under the trees to escape the scortching midday sun while a couple of taverns at the southern end of the beach provide reasonably priced nourishment, frappe (iced coffe) and other essentials (i.e. ouzo, wine, beer, etc.)

The beach is facing to the west and offers some amazing sunset vistas. Freestyle camping is allowed right on the beach and most people pitch their tents under the trees. Camping here is free, but there are no facilities, you have to use the taverns' if you're shy. Topless bathing is the norm for the ladies while at the northern end of the beach nude bathing is not uncommon.

Tucked into a small bay, this is a beautiful beach with crystal clear water and it's great for kids too. Unfortunately, there is no designated area for boats and jetskis and they come very close to the shore where people are swimming. Obviously, this is dangerous and you have to watch out, especially if you are snorkeling, they may not see you.

This location is very close to the town of Lefkada and during the high season (July-August) it gets very crowded. If you choose to eat at one of the local taverns ask for a legible, itemized bill and check it against the menu, we ate there twice and both times we were overcharged. Avoid fresh fish dishes, they're overpriced.

Best time to visit is in late May, June, and early September.

Although an island, you don’t need to take a boat to reach Lefkada. It is seperated from the mainland by a narrow canal and all you have to do to get there is simply cross the drawbridge..

Lefkada is part of the Ionian islands in the western part of Greece. It's a mountainous island, covered with dense vegetation to the east and south. Its eastern coast slopes gently down to the sea, which is sheltered from the wind and dotted with thickly wooded islets.

The capital town of the island is also called (surprise) Lefkada and it's a tranquil, picturesque town built on a natural harbour. You can enjoy a walk along the town's streets (many restricted to automobiles) or savor your frappe (iced coffe) in one of the cafes that line the promenade or one of the town squares. Surprizingly, this sleepy town has a very lively nightlife during summer weekends. The town gets crowded and you'll even find a few nightclubs in addition to the bars, cafes, and restaurants.

There are few historical ruins or sites to see on Lefkada. The island's claim to fame are the beautiful and remote white sand beaches of the western coast and yes, they are as pristine as they look in the travel brochures.

A few decades ago Aristotelis Onasis bought Scorpios, a small island off the eastern coast of Lefkada right across from Nydri. Of course, he attracted a lot of publicity and for a while Lefkada acquired a cosmopolitan shine. Today, Scorpios still belongs to Onassis' sole surviving heir, his grandaughter Christina but she hardly ever visits.

The beaches I got to explore are Pefkoulia, St. Nikitas and Kathisma.
